This is a simple counter that gives you a basic idea of how healthy your lungs are based on lung capacity. Although not a complete diagnostic tool, our game can give you a vague idea of what your lung capacity is. Healthy lungs have a higher capacity and let you hold your breath for longer.

How to Play

Tap and hold your breath for as long as you can. How long you hold it in is one indicator of lung health.

    • With your mouse, left click on the screen to begin and end the test.
  • Touchscreen devices
    • Tap on the screen with your fingers to begin and end the test.
• Game Play
  • To begin, take a deep breath and left click or tap on the screen the moment you stop.
  • Hold your breath and observe the blue wheel.
    • It will move in a clockwise direction in the circular track.
    • Let it revolve for as long as you can while holding your breath.
    • Left click or tap on the screen the moment you want to resume breathing.
      • In normal circumstances, you cannot force yourself to hold your breath for too long. Your body will make you to start breathing at one point.
      • You don’t need to wait until that point. Start breathing at any point you begin to feel uncomfortable.
  • Observe the meter at the bottom row and see where the pointer lands.
    • If you couldn’t make it to 2 cycles, you’ve got a very low lung capacity.
    • If you made it to 2 to 4 cycles, you’ve got the lung capacity of someone of average health.
    • If you make it to 5 to 9 cycles, you have lung capacity equivalent of someone with good lung health.
    • Go past 10 and you have excellent lung capacity.

Lung Capacity and Health

Only a medical doctor can diagnose if you have a specific lung issue and recommend treatment. This especially rings true if you have asthma or other health conditions.

Lung capacity is one of many indicators of lung health. Over time, your lungs gradually lose their ability to expel all the air as you exhale. This causes a buildup of stale air within them that reduces the amount of fresh air you take in. This can affect your ability to do physically demanding activities. If you’ve ever found yourself trying to catch your breath after doing some heavy lifting, you might need to re-evaluate your lung health.

Reduced lung capacity is common to lung issues like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In addition, unhealthy habits like smoking can contribute to reduced lung capacity.

Much like how cardio exercise can help you build heart health, breathing exercises can help you build lung capacity. Ask your doctor on which breathing exercises are right for you.
