How to Play

Navigate through the hidden chambers of Ludo’s castle as Star and Marco. Improve your attacks and move forward by doing quests for allies strewn across the dungeon.

Starting the Game
- On the welcome screen, select the play button below the game’s title to begin.
- Your web browser automatically saves your game progress.
  - Select the trophy button on the top right corner to view your achievements.
  - Select the trash button next to the trophy button to clear your previous game progress.
- The game begins with a voiced cutscene explaining the game’s premise.
Game Controls
- Desktop
  - With your mouse, left click to select and navigate.
- Touchscreen devices
  - Tap on the screen with your fingers to select and navigate.
Game Play
- Interface
  - Your attacks and other useful items appear in slots located on the top left corner of the screen.
    - You have 4 slots, 5 counting the slot for your inventory.
  - Your lives are shown on the top right corner.
  - In-game dialogue appears on the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Basic moves
  - Select anywhere on the screen to move there. Star and Marco move together.
  - Select the attacks from the top left corner to switch between Marco and Star.
    - Pick up items by getting close to them.
  - To attack, select any enemy within range.
    - You have multiple basic attacks you can choose from & the status of those attacks changes over time.
    - You can only actively use one attack type at a time & can switch between them during cooldowns when the enemies are stunned.
    - Star does range attacks.
    - Marco does close melee attacks.
  - Select non-player characters (NPCs) to talk to them.
- Quests
  - The game is divided into episodes, which in turn are divided into quests.
  - NPCs will provide you with quests, which will help you move forward in the game.
    - You gain items or upgrades to your attacks each time you finish a quest.
    - Complete all the quests in the level to proceed to the next episode.
  - Keep track of your quests through the book next to the inventory button.
  - There are 2 kinds of quests in this game:
    - Episodic quests are needed to move the game forward. Finish all these quests to unlock a new episode.
    - Side quests do not directly move the plot along. However, they might be essential in gaining the upgrades or items you need to fulfill episodic quests.
- Inventory
  - The inventory automatically stores various items you collect on your quest.
  - To view the items and their descriptions, open the inventory.
  - Select an item to use or equip it.
  - Quest items are automatically removed from your inventory once you reach the NPC you need to talk to.
- Enemies, attacks, and lives
  - Enemies will attack you if they spot you.
    - An enemy has spotted you if they show a word balloon with an exclamation point (!) above them.
    - Once they spot you, they will attack unless you move out of the way or you hit them. You have a very small window to try and hit them before they reach you.
    - You can attack them again once you’re at a safe distance.
  - You can dispatch enemies by attacking them.
    - Both Star and Marco are capable of attacking enemies.
      - Star can attack enemies from a distance.
        Rainbow Blast
        Star fires a shot at an enemy.
        Upgrades to Rainbow Fist and Flaming Rainbow Fist
        <3 Arrow
        Star fires an arrow that arcs over barriers.
        Upgrades to Crystal <3 Attack and Crystal Rainbow <3 Attack
        Narwhal Blast
        Star drops a narwhal on a target.
        Upgrades to Mega Narwhal Blast and Baby Narwhal Blast
      - Marco must get close to attack enemies.
        Karate chop
        Marco hits a target with his hands.
        Upgrades to Super Karate Chop and Monster Arm Chop
        Karate kick
        Marco kicks his enemies. Upgraded versions can deflect projectiles and open doors.
        Upgrades to Double Kick and Backflip Kick
        Karate throw
        Marco tosses a targeted enemy.
        Upgrades to Roll Throw and Arm Monster Throw
      - Star and Marco can do combo attacks using the Flaming Rainbow Fist and Monster Arm Chop.
        This is done by stunning the enemy with one attack and following up with the other.
    - Upgraded attacks have a brief cooldown time, which prevents you from attacking enemies relentlessly.
      - To avoid getting curb-stomped by enemies, attack the very first enemy in front of you.
      - Often, attacking enemies stuns them before taking them out. This will buy you some time.
    - You can sometimes use explosives to do the dirty work for you in later levels.
      - Any enemy within the blast radius of explosives will be briefly stunned before they perish.
      - You can lose hearts if you stand too close, so clear the area.
    - Enemies respawn each time you re-enter a level.
      - Remember where they are and be prepared to fight them again.
      - The exception to these are bosses. Once you dispatch a boss, you don’t need to deal with them again.
  - Locked areas.
    - Some areas of the level are locked in some way.
    - In most cases, you need only to attack the switch for the barriers to go down.
    - Some barriers are locked by devices without a switch.
      - There are some metal barriers similar to the switch-based ones that stay up. These often indicate that they are part of a quest that is yet to be activated.
      - Doors remain locked until you find a key. The first 2 keys can only be recovered by beating the boss. The last key can be retrieved within the level.
  - Hidden areas
    - Hidden areas are designated by cracks on the wall.
    - You can only access them once you’ve
  - Hearts
    - Hearts are shown on the top right corner of the screen.
      - They represent your hit points.
      - You have 6 of them to start with.
    - You lose hearts each time you’re attacked. Lose all of them and it’s game over.
    - When you lose all your hearts, you have the option of starting over from where you last left off.
    - Replenish your hearts by eating food items you pick up around the world.
      - Nachos will restore 1 heart.
      - Smoothies will restore 2.
      - We recommend paying attention to your remaining hearts when taking food items to replenish your health. This will help you choose the right food to take.
- Achievements
  - The game has 5 achievements:
    - Better with friends: Blow up 30 enemies alongside other enemies.
    - Skulls o’ fun: Destroy 20 enemies with explosives.
    - We like danger: Defeat 80 enemies.
    - Curiosity… leads to awesome: Find all items in the secret rooms.
    - That’s teamwork: Defeat 20 enemies with combo attacks.
  - Keep track of your achievements by selecting the trophy button on the welcome screen.
- Tips
  - Keep exploring.
    - You’ll never know what you’ll find when you look around.
    - Backtracking will often lead to opening doors that you couldn’t access earlier in the game.
    - Some areas only become accessible after special divider blocks fall upon defeating all enemies in a room.
  - Try to memorize where your enemies where when you enter a room. This way, you can enter a room prepared.

Star’s critters have escaped their dome and are on the loose. Behind the barricades, Star Butterfly and her friend Marco Diaz must hatch a plan to return the critters to the dome before they overwhelm the entire house. To bring the critters back, Star must fire colored magic spell balls to match the critters with, bubble-shooter style.

Keep the critters from reaching the barricades using Star’s bubbles and color changing spells.
Use cupcakes to call on your allies. They will help you clear groups of critters quickly.
Collect other spell balls to let you switch between spells.
Play through all 15 challenging levels.

How to Play

Help Star and Marco return each of the escaped critters. Match the spells with 2 or more critters of the same color to return them to the dome.

Starting the Game
- Select the pink crystalline play button to load the welcome screen.
- On the welcome screen, select the play button to begin.
  - Select the speaker button on the top right corner to turn the game’s sound on and off.
- The game begins with a cutscene explaining the game’s premise.
  - Select the play button on the bottom right to move to the next slide.
  - Alternately, select the x button on the bottom left to skip the cutscene entirely.

- Pause menu options

    - Help: Opens the game’s tutorial screen

- Levels
  - Levels are unlocked in sequence. At the start of the game, only the first level is playable.
  - Most levels have a cutscene that explains the new gameplay elements introduced.
    - Like the opening cutscene, you can let it play out using the play button on the bottom right.
    - Skip the cutscene entirely by selecting the x button on the bottom left.
  - One you finish a level, you unlock the next one.
  - You can replay all the levels you’ve already played to improve your star rating.
- Basics
  - The game works with the same fundamental rules as other bubble shooter games.
    - As Star, cast a spell of a specific color at the advancing wall of critters.
    - The spell must land on a group of 2 or more critters of the same color to clear them.
    - If the spell doesn’t land on the right number of critters, a new critter of the spell’s color appears.
    - Don’t let the critters reach the barricade on the left side of the screen.
    - Each time you clear a group that holds up other critters, the critters that are no longer attached are removed form the screen as well.
  - Key differences set this game apart from other bubble shooters:
    - The game is horizontally oriented. The wall of critters are on the right whereas the
    - You have a limited amount of ammunition.
      - When you run out of ammo, you fail the level.
      - You can see your remaining spells on the top left corner of the screen.
      - In general you will typically run out of ammo about half way through the game if you do not regularly use magic spells.
    - You can select the spell you cast based on the spell balls you’ve collected.
      - Select Star and Marco to select a different set of spell balls to cast.
      - You only have a limited number of spell balls to exchange with, based on how many you pick up while playing.
      - In addition to the color spells, later in the game you unlock two more spells which suck critters into the void or shoot flames down at the critters.
    - In later levels you gain several allies that will help you clear out the wall of critters faster
    - Starting from level 6. you also have to contend with pots.
      - Pots act as barriers that keep you from aiming at specific groups of critters. Often, you must shoot around them.
      - You cannot clear pots, but they act to shield and anchor critters to the group.
      - If you detach a pot (by taking out the critters below or beside it), you can clear it from the playing field, as well as anything still attached to it.
    - On some of the later levels you have to rescue friends by removing all the critters surrounding them.
- Bonuses
  - Bonuses come in the form of cupcakes.
    - Cupcakes appear in game after clearing large swaths of critters. Select them as they appear.
    - Each time you activate your allies’ powers, you use up one cupcake.
    - If you still have cupcakes left after the game ends, you can receive a time bonus that reduces your total counted playtime.
    - Each level has a different ally or group of allies on it. Not all allies are present on each level.
  - Each ally provides a different benefit:
    - Minotaur: Pushes back the crowd of critters.
    - Flying pig: Removes all critters of a specific color.
    - Pirate Bear: Hits 3 critters of your choice.
    - Flying pig: Takes out a group of critters of any color within a specific range
    - Raccoon: Allows you to rapidly shoot bubbles for a short period of time without drawing down your remaining bubbles inventory. Be warned you can not layer a color spell on top of this rapid stream of fire.
    - Disco worm: allows you to change colors individually of 3 different bubbles, one at a time.
- Star ratings
  - Your star rating for the level depends on how fast you clear all the critters.
  - For every cupcake you don’t use, you get some time removed from your total.
  - Finish within or below the level’s time to beat (revealed after you finish the level) to earn 3 stars.
- Tips
  - Swap balls whenever you can to maximize the number of critters you can clear within a turn. Your ball count is limited, so shooting off colored balls that do not make matches depletes a vital resource while giving you more balls you’ll have to remove later.
  - Choose larger groups of critter to clear, especially those that smaller groups of critters are attached to.
  - You can bounce your shots off the top or bottom walls to get into hard to reach places.
  - Whenever possible, use your allies’ powers to strategically clear large swaths of critters at once.
  - That said, conserve your cupcakes to take advantage of the time bonus.

Game Play

- Coins

    - Large coins are worth 5.
  - You earn coins through 2 ways:
    - Collecting them from the level
    - Winning them from the game’s challenges
  - Coins can be used to buy items in the shop.
  - You can also spend coins to get a revive.
    - The first time you crash, you can be revived by paying 200 coins.
    - By your next fall, you must pay 400 coins. After that, the next revive costs 800 points, and so on.
    - The game only offers a revive if you can afford it.
- Challenges
  - Challenges are offered each time you start a game. They provide a reward at the end for accomplishing them.
  - These are determined at random. They are as follows:
    - Earn 500 coins.
    - Jump over 20 enemies.
    - Fall over 30 enemies.
    - Shoot 40 enemies.
  - You must fulfill the challenge you have before getting a new one.
  - Fortunately, you can meet the goals of the challenge over several sessions.
    - The game saves your challenge progress even after you crash.
    - The shoot enemies challenge can only be done through several sessions.
  - Challenges reward you with between 1,000 to 2,000 coins.
- Enemies
  - There are 3 enemies in this game.
    - Lobsters
      - You can dodge or attack them by jumping.
      - If you land on them when you switch lanes, it counts as an attack.
      - They are the most common and easiest enemy to deal with.
    - Sloths
      - These enemies are undefeatable without an amulet or a butterfly blast.
      - They cannot be surmounted except by changing lanes.
      - Be careful. They stretch, which can cause them to occupy 2 lanes. Because of this, it’s actually safer to go under a sloth.
    - Chickens
      - Chickens will fire a stream of eggs at the entire lane.
      - The only way to avoid them is by switching lanes.
      - They appear infrequently, so they should be easier to dodge.
  - Hitting an enemy will cause you to crash. The game will end if you have no more hearts and can’t afford a revive.
- Shop
  - Powerups
    - Powerups are one-time use items that cost a specific amount.
    - To use them, select their icon on the bottom left corner of the screen.
    - The powerups are as follows:
      - Glowing shield (200 coins): protects you for 15 seconds
      - Butterfly blast (150 coins): Automatically shoots your enemies for 15 seconds
      - Dice (300 coins): A random bonus that can be either good or bad
    - You can only have 1 powerup at a time.
  - Hearts
    - Hearts let you survive getting hit, much like a revive.
    - Like powerups, hearts are single-use items. Once you use them, you must buy them again.
    - You can buy hearts in the following increments:
      - 1 heart (150 coins)
      - 2 hearts (240 coins)
      - 3 hearts (300 coins)
    - Once you lose all your hearts, you can still buy revives if you can afford it.
    - We recommend using hearts instead of revives as they have no ramping costs. 3 hearts is cheaper than 3 revives (1,400 coins).
  - Appearance
    - If you earn enough coins, you can spend it on a new look for Star.
      - Casual Star (unlocked)
      - Warrior Star (30,000 coins)
      - Party Star (30,000 coins)
    - These are purely cosmetic. We recommend prioritizing them last.
