How to Play

This is a free game which teaches children the basics of color theory and how to mix colors to create new colors.

  • Starting the Game
    • Click on the yellow and white button on the game load screen to start the game.
    • Initially the game offers a single play button on the welcome screen which runs through the 4 parts of the game sequentially.
      • Your web browser automatically stores your game progress.
    • After you play through the game once it offers 4 different options on the welcome screen: learn about colors, color quiz, practice value, and color match.
      • The first section is an introduction to colors.
      • The second section is a quiz to see how well you learned color basics.
      • The third section teaches about mixing white or black to other colors to create alternative color values.
      • The fourth section has players mix paints from the paint pallet to create colors.
  • Game Controls
    • Desktop
      • Use your mouse left click on the next button to scroll through instructions from the brush named Hue.
      • Use your mouse left click button to select a paint color and drag it to the center of the pallet, then release to mix it in.
    • Touchscreen devices
      • Touch the screen with your finger to use it like a mouse.
    • The game offers pause and sound control buttons in the upper right corner.
  • Game Play
    • Primary colors
      • Learn about the 3 primary colors: red, blue and yellow.
      • Primary colors can not be mixed from other colors, and act as the starting point for other colors.
      • Use the primary colors to create the secondary colors.
    • Secondary colors
      • Learn about the 3 secondary colors.
      • Orange is red mixed with yellow.
      • Purple is blue mixed with red.
      • Green is yellow mixed with blue.
      • Complimentary colors are those opposite one another on a color pallet.
        • Red and green, orange and blue, yellow and purple are complimentary colors.
        • Mixing complimentary colors creates a neutral gray-brown color.
    • Tertiary colors
      • Tertiary colors are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color.
      • Vermilion is created by mixing orange and red.
      • Magenta is created by mixing red and purple.
      • Violet is created by mixing purple and blue.
      • Teal is created by mixing green with purple.
      • Chartreuse is created by mixing green and yellow.
      • Amber is created by mixing yellow and orange.
      • Tertiary colors also have complimentary colors
        • Vermilion and teal, magenta and chartreuse, violet and amber are complimentary colors.
    • Ten question color quiz
      • Asks questions based on the above information
      • Shows a progress meter in green at the top of the screen.
    • Value
      • Value is an element of color which describes how light or dark it is, which is created by mixing white or black into the color.
      • Mix white and black to create a gray circle.
      • Turn the circle painting into a sphere with shadow by adding more black or white to the pain color and painting additional curves and circles on the canvas.
    • Color mixing
      • Mix any combination of primary colors, secondary colors, white and black to create the colors shown.
      • If you get stuck you can click on the hint button for a hint.
      • Tips
        • Some colors require you mixing a color with itself and adding in the opposite colors.
        • Some colors require you to mix in black or white once or twice.
        • Some colors require you to mix adjacent colors (or mix itself twice and an adjacent color once), along with adjusting value by mixing in black or white.
  • Target Audience
    • The game is suited for younger children learning about colors of the visible spectrum.
    • The game has no adult content.
