Hold Position Game Play Instructions
How to Play
Shoot the helicopters and tanks to earn money which can be spent to make your base stronger.
Starting the Game
Click on continue to begin where you left off or new game to start from scratch.
Shoot the Helicopters & Tanks
As helicopters dropping bombs and tanks fall into the game shoot at them.
Use your mouse cursor to point and then click repeatedly to rapidly fire.
As you destroy helicopters and tanks you earn money that can be spent making your firepower and base defenses stronger.
You control the bunker gun while the ground turrets and air turrets aim automatically.
Strategy
The goal of the game is to last 10 minutes.
If you do not last 10 minutes you can use your money earned to buy upgrades.
In general, off the start it is better to increase your firepower before investing heavily in defenses because being marginally stronger with your shot can kill enemies just coming into the screen before they get a shot off, which in turn allows you to earn more money faster.
The ground turrets are quite weak off the start so it can make sense to upgrade their damage at least once or twice.
If you plan on actively playing the game it can make sense to increase the damage of the bunker gun as well.
If you wanted to let the game run in the background to power up for a few rounds then it would make sense to power up the air turrets along with the ground turrets since they fire automatically and you gain experience when they destroy an enemy.
Each aspect of the game is upgraded separately.
Upgrades start off as costing $500 each.
Initial values and upgrades are shown in the table below.
Damage is offense, whereas health is defense.

This game is part of the Hold Position series. We also offer Hold Position 2 and Hold Position 3. The game mechanics between the first and second titles in the series are quite similar, while the game mechanics are quite a bit different for the third game in the series.
Fighting: In the first two games you can control the center character who participates in the fighting. In the third game you simply continually upgrade the castle which does all the fighting automatically.
Upgrades: In the first two games you purchase upgrades after dying off, while in the third game you purchase upgrades in the middle of the game using gold and can purchase further upgrades with diamonds after dying.
Sustained Upgrades: The diamond-based upgrades last from game to game in the third edition of this series while the gold-coin purchased upgrades reset to zero. In the first two games all upgrades are sustained from round to round unless you reset the game data or play in a different web browser lacking your saved gameplay data.
Goal: In the first two games the goal is to last through a 10-minute siege. In the third game the goal is to last through as many waves of attacks as you can. There is no specific end to the third game and the enemies keep getting strong each round until you lose.

Here’s a hint: You cannot win on the first try. The goal is to survive 10 minutes of relentless attacks from enemy helicopters and tanks. You control only one turret and rely on four automated ones for extra defense. In the first few attempts you will likely be a goner two minutes in.
What you do instead is use the money you accumulated from defeating enemies for upgrade. After each game, you can spend your cash on attack strength or hit points. It’s often better to upgrade your attack strength before anything else. After all, you earn money from defeating enemies rather than enduring them.
Unlike most tower defense games, you must fail to progress. Your goal is to keep playing until you win. To take away some of the tedium, you can leave the game on autopilot once you’ve upgraded your turrets enough. This mandatory farming might not be everyone’s cup of tea. But if you like grinding your way to victory, then this is the tower defense game for you.
While the goal of the game is to last for 10 minutes, it’s impossible on the first try. You’re lucky to last two minutes on your first game. But it’s still an addicting shooting game. The strategy is to shoot as many enemies to collect money. From there, upgrade your weapons so you can shoot more efficiently. The more powerful your weapons, the longer you can last in the game. Each time you die, you collect more money from your enemies. Use the money to prioritize upgrades on your air rocket, bunker, and ground shooter.
As a strategy, I learned to focus air rockets on helicopters. These take longer to destroy and inflict the most damage. Let the ground shooters take care of the tanks. If you keep earning more money to upgrade your weapons, you will eventually reach the 10 minute mark. It’s a fun and obsessive game if you have the time.
